I would buy this app the minute it was available. I’m on so many forums ranging from Macs to Guitars that I forget half the places I’m a member. The layout is great — familiar to those using RSS applications with a very Apple-like interface. I also like that it has so much of a focus — while I’m a little concerned about how it would support so many different forum packages, I’d like to see this one in development.

As a musician, I love this idea. Whistler would be great to have on my MacBook to get down the quick riffs I always have in my head. Right now I have to run downstairs and record it with GarageBand — you can’t always just drop everything and do that. However, using Whistler I could just tap or hum and get what I need into the computer and then work on it later.

I can see people pointing to this as a prime example of the type of advanced applications developers can do the Mac. As much as people might ooh and ahh at first, I’m not sure if most people would use it after the first couple of weeks. Having said that, I think this one is just too cool to pass up.

Cookbook is a great idea and one that is needed. Having voice recognition and utilizing a shopping list idea is great. Integrating Amazon is certainly a hot topic — I like what Jason Harris said about using shopping plug-ins and let the community build them. I wonder instead of actually buying the ingredients if you could just inventory the items you bought using iSight as a scanner.

There are other applications that carry the promise of easy file syncing and as much as I want a really good syncing app, I don’t have any of them. The layout of Portal looks well thought out and very easy to use, even for the beginner. Throw in Apple’s Time Machine look and feel and I think you have the makings of a real killer application.
