O’Reilly Mac DevCenter Blog

Born in 1969. First Apple in 1976 (Yes, it was an Apple I). First program developed in 1978 (on Apple II). First commercial development in 1986 (on Atari ST). First Mac in 1989. Started company in 1992. Got lured out of university with money halfway through a Masters degree in Informatics in 1993. Founded Boinx Software with my brother in 1996. Had to write off cool OpenDoc products in 1997. Got into Web development in 1998. Managed to avoid getting rich in Internet Bubble of 2001. Managed to avoid going broke in Internet Bubble of 2001. Worked as Mac journalist and trainer in my spare time. First commercial Mac OS X app shipped in 2002. My team won the O'Reilly Mac OS X Innovators award in 2003 (for a stop motion animation app) and 2004 (for a way cool Mac slideshow app). Boinx Software recently won the Apple Design Award 2006 Best Mac OS X User Experience Runner-up for FotoMagico. Did a couple of things I can't really talk about. Google claims to know almost 20,000 pages about me. Probably nearly all of them are irrelevant.

Of course I have to comment on this as it is very close to our product iVeZeen. I think vlogging is something a lot of people want to do to chronicle their lives or the lives of their children. It requires a lot of time and technology savvy to do, however, and thus will gain popularity only slowly over time. There certainly is a lot of cool technology in Mac OS X that makes this fun.

A very nice idea only clouded by the fact that I don’t get to see my desktop very often. In fact, I get to see the view outside the window much more often than my desktop with all the cluttered files and application windows obscuring the view. Maybe this thing should be made to float on top of the other windows and use lights, shadows, clouds and things like that to convey its message.

Blossom
Dan Lundmark

A very original idea. Is there anything like scientific research that this could be based upon?

Whistler
Richard Whitelock

This will be a blast with many musicians I know. As it requires a certain amount of talent, it is not for me, though.

Minerva
John Bell

Wouldn’t it be nice if you could click on a contact in your Address Book and see all the emails you sent to and received from this person?

Chatboard
Michael Wuerthele

An idea whose time has come? There is much potential to be realised in electronic collaboration. A couple of companies out there working with electronic whiteboards already offer functionality like this, but none of the solutions seems to be done quite right. A major roadblock might be bandwidth between participants.

There are few ideas out there that spark my imagination. This is one of them. A new way to organise your files. Combine it with the power of Google earth. Create iMovie templates for title animations. Create templates for an audiovisual travel blog. Now I feel like I was there… The planning aspect is not as important to me, but it might be to other people.

iGTD
Jeff Greenberg

This app seems to have caught the attention of judges already. It is an ambitious project but seeing the mockups made me realise why I failed using iCal, Now UptoDate, a Palm and a dozen other apps and means to create a todo list for myself. I need a todo list organiser for chaotic people, not a todo list app that tries to make me become a less chaotic person.
