Portal
Portal is an application designed to sync files, folders, and applications between two or more Macs. For users with just two Macs, keeping them in sync with today’s applications is far more of a hassle than it should be. Even Apple’s own .Mac Sync falls short (plus it costs too much, and requires an annual subscription). Portal picks up where Apple leaves off, integrating all your syncing needs into one simple window, and taking full advantage of Core Animation to add a touch of fun. And yet, despite Portal’s flexibility and strength, it is still easy to use:
1. Pick a Mac
Any Mac within range of Bonjour will appear in the interface, as well as any mac that your copy of Portal has been introduced to before. Select a system to view its basic specs, number of files or applications chosen to be synced, sync schedule, and the sync animation.
1. Pick your Items
Portal syncs files or folders just as you’d expect, but it also syncs applications like Mail, Safari, and iPhoto. Drag any application icon into the Portal window and Portal will find all the associated files. For popular applications (like iTunes), you’ll be able to customize the sync profiles, such as limiting the sync to a few choice playlists or photo albums.
3. Sync
Once the files are selected and they know where to go, just click sync. Portal checks for file conflicts and chooses the most recently edited file. While the sync runs, the user enjoys a smooth Core Animation display. Portal includes many styles such as Wormholes, Earthquakes, etc.
